December CPI dips 0.1 percent, up 1.9 percent year-on-year

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) declined 0.1 percent in December on a seasonally adjusted basis after being unchanged in November. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.9 percent before seasonal adjustment.



Gallup:  Americans remain much more confident about economy than peace

Sixty percent of Americans are optimistic about employment in coming year, 49 percent are optimistic about the economy generally, but just 28 percent believe 2019 will be a peaceful year internationally.



U.S. fertility rate 16 percent below replacement level without immigration

For the population to reproduce itself at current numbers, the “total fertility rate” needs to be 2,100 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age over their lifetime. But the latest data show a current rate of just 1,765.5 per 1,000, or 16 percent below the number needed to keep the population stable without additions through immigration.
