Developers Need Better Tax Incentives to Adopt Green Roofs
Tax and technology attorney Andrew Leahey argues in Bloomberg Tax that a time-sensitive combination of tax incentives and penalties is essential to drive widespread adoption of green roofs. In his article, he argues that even though green roofs can mitigate urban heat islands and more, existing tax credits — such as the one offered by New York City — has seen limited success due to insufficient financial assistance. Installation costs average $25 to $30 per square foot, deterring property owners and current tax abatements only cover a fraction of the total.
