Meritage Homes Corporation has been building homes for more than 30 years and has always been committed to creating affordable, cutting-edge homes. Energyefficiency is something the company strives to put in the forefront of their ideals, so much so they were named as last year’s ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence.
ENERGY STAR claims it gave Meritage that title not only for building 4,600 ENERGY STAR certified homes in one year—which was estimated to save nearly 36 million kWh of electricity, eliminate over 54 million lbs of CO2 and reduce homeowner utility bills by more than $4.3 million annually— but also for its efforts in educating its employees, industry stakeholders and the public about the value and many benefits of practicing energy efficiency.
Meritage knows that not only is it good for the environment, but that it saves their homebuyers money in a prolonged way, and it was the first national homebuilder to be 100 percent ENERGY STAR qualified in every home they build.
Meritage Homes Corporation champions the construction of homes that have earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification and uses the EPA’s indoor airPLUS and WaterSense labels throughout its many homes— such as the luxurious eco-friendly homes in its Windermer Landing community in Orlando, Fla. In addition to their eco-friendly heating and cooling units and faucets, they install energy-efficient lighting, low-E2 windows, and use spray-foam insulation. Meritage says their homes, due to their unique ultra-green building practices, are about twice as energyefficient as a typical U.S. home of the same size. By providing an energy-cost savings of up to 50 percent, they save homeowners an average of $50,000 over the span of a 30-year mortgage.
They are the eighth largest public homebuilder in the United States, based on homes closed in 2014, and build single family homes for first-time buyers, move-ups, luxury homes and residences for active adults across the Western, Southern, and Southeastern parts of the country. They have designed and built more than 85,000 homes over a 30 year history. Steven J. Hilton, the chairman and CEO of Meritage has said, “You run into people in the supermarket or restaurant who bought a house from you. They tell you how happy they are, how much they like it. That gives you a great feeling.”
