Minority Homeownership Continues to Lag, Reports Say

Minority home buyers are continuing to struggle despite recent rebounds in the overall U.S. homeownership rate, according to two reports released this week. Researchers at the Urban Institute, a policy research group, found large disparities between the homeownership rates of black families and white families in all 100 of the cities with the largest black populations. The metropolitan areas with the largest gaps in homeownership rates are concentrated in the Midwest and the Northeast, according to the Urban Institute report. Four of the five metropolitan areas with the largest number of black households—Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D. C.—are in this region.
