Net-Zero-Energy Homes Vs. Sustainable Homes: Key Differences
Developers are setting their sights beyond merely building sustainably and now have their eyes on building cutting-edge net-zero-energy smart homes.
“These homes embody a lifestyle that blends opulence and eco-friendliness, embracing luxurious living without compromising on the environment. These homes drastically reduce energy consumption by incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as energy-efficient equipment, smart home automation, solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heat pumps, energy storage systems, advanced insulation, smart energy management, and passive design principles. The use of environment-friendly materials, water-saving fixtures, and innovative indoor air quality systems adds to their eco-friendly appeal,” explains Himanshu Jain, VP – sales, marketing and CRM, of a developer firm.
How is a net-zero-energy home different from a sustainable one?
According to Times Property,
- Energy production: Net-zero-energy homes prioritise energy production, typically through renewable sources such as solar panels. They aim to generate enough clean energy to offset or even exceed the energy consumed by the home. This feature is not always a primary focus in all sustainable homes;
- Energy efficiency: These homes use advanced technologies and construction methods to reduce energy consumption significantly, often achieving a very low energy demand;
- Zero or low utility bills: A key characteristic is that it often results in zero or very low utility bills. This is because the home produces as much energy as it uses, leading to minimal ongoing energy expenses. Sustainable homes aim to reduce utility bills as well, but they may not necessarily achieve zero net energy costs.
