Developers are setting their sights beyond merely building sustainably and now have their eyes on building cutting-edge net-zero-energy smart homes.

How is a net-zero-energy home different from a sustainable one?

- Energy production: Net-zero-energy homes prioritise energy production, typically through renewable sources such as solar panels. They aim to generate enough clean energy to offset or even exceed the energy consumed by the home. This feature is not always a primary focus in all sustainable homes;
- Energy efficiency: These homes use advanced technologies and construction methods to reduce energy consumption significantly, often achieving a very low energy demand;
- Zero or low utility bills: A key characteristic is that it often results in zero or very low utility bills. This is because the home produces as much energy as it uses, leading to minimal ongoing energy expenses. Sustainable homes aim to reduce utility bills as well, but they may not necessarily achieve zero net energy costs.
