USGBC-LA Opens Submissions for 7th Annual Sustainable Innovation Awards

Awards Include New Categories, Multiple 3rd Party Certifications

Los Angeles, CA (September 6, 2017) – The U.S. Green Building Council-Los Angeles chapter (USGBC-LA) will host its 13th Annual Green Gala on November 30, 2017 at Taglyan Cultural Complex in Hollywood. The Green Gala celebrates the impactful regional projects that are changing the way we think about sustainability in our built environment. This year’s 7th Annual Sustainable Innovation Awards (SIAs), presented at the Gala, includes new award categories and is open to submissions of projects from multiple third party certifications. Award nominations are open now and are due on October 1st by 5:00pm. To nominate a team’s project, please CLICK HERE.

L.A.’s “Oscars” of green building, the SIAs reflect the Chapter’s emphasis on energy and water savings, air quality, good design, transportation, resiliency and community engagement. The awards consist of 11 topical categories: Project of the Year, Excellence in Water Conservation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation in Design, Health & Wellbeing, Green Apple Day Project of the Year, and, for the first time, Transportation. Additionally, two new special awards, selected by the Board of Directors, will make their debut: Green Business Leader of the Year, and Partner of the Year.

Also new is an expanded invitation to multiple third party verified projects. Past awards were solely open for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) projects, followed by WELL when it came to market. The SIAs also now encourage Envision, EcoDistricts, PEER, SITES, Living Building Challenge, and Passivehouse projects to enter the competition and highlight their innovation approaches.

“USGBC-LA members work on all types of projects, from buildings to airports to bridges to neighborhoods and are using a full suite of rating systems that work for optimizing sustainability projects. We recognize and honor that holistic approach and we are pleased to recognize innovations in technologies and strategies,” states Dominique Hargreaves, USGBC-LA Executive Director. “I’m also thrilled to newly honor the Green Business Leader of the Year & Partner of the Year since these people and groups are accelerating sustainability.”

Each year, the SIAs honor premier projects that have already been envisioned, designed and built, recognizing exceptional achievement and innovation in each category for Southern California certified projects from the previous year. The submissions attract project teams throughout Southern CA’s sustainable community and are awarded regardless of certification achieved. To see the 2016 winners announcement, please click here.

“The Sustainable Innovation Awards recognize project teams that go above and beyond standard practices and use innovative strategies that can be used as a model for future sustainable design and construction, and opening it up to any rating system emphasizes that message,” state SIA co-chairs Amelia Feichtner of Cuningham Group and Patti Harburg-Petrich of Buro Happold. “Now more than ever, creative and innovative strategies are essential to the success and sustainability of our diverse communities.”
