Today, Van Metre is the largest local and independent homebuilder in Northern Virginia, building as small as 30 homes in one enclave, to the master-planned community of Stone Ridge hosting thousands of residents.

The company began with a couple of single-family homes that Van Metre built in Burke. Today, it manages 3,500 apartments and owns or manages more than one million square feet of commercial space, including one of their newest developments, Brambleton in Birchwood, a 255-acre, 55 plus development catering to aging Baby Boomers in Loudoun County, Va. “Life Refreshes at 55” is Birchwood’s slogan, and its residents will have use of a 20,000-squarefoot clubhouse, starting in spring 2019, to try new pursuits.

By focusing solely on developments in Virginia, Van Metre Homes is able to provide excellence throughout their expansive portfolio. Each Van Metre home promotes energy conservation by using environmentally- friendly construction materials. Because Van Metre owns and develops most of their communities, they are able to environment surrounding the homes, leaving open spaces, saving trees and more. Advertised on their website, “With a 60-year history of building homes in Virginia, we know the area and the people. Because our homeowners are our neighbors and friends, we are constantly reminded of the impact our work has on our shared community. In Virginia, we own every aspect of design, construction, and delivery. That gives us the control we need to ensure that every home meets our exacting standards.”

Marketed as a family based company, Van Metre stays true to those familial ideals, “What’s great about a family business is they tend to care more about the people. We measure our success in profits, but also in customer and employee satisfaction,” Vice Chairman, President, and CEO Rick Rabil said. “When your name is on it, you tend to care more. That makes the job easier, that helps with referrals and it helps the business grow.”

“With $1 billion in assets and nearly 700 employees, Van Metre has also taken a number of measures to become more competitive with larger builders,” Rabil said. To become more cost-effective, and competitive, they have created their own architectural team, as well as a plant where they produce wall panels, doors, trusses, stairs and other materials.
