Washington Gas, groups sue DC over net-zero building code that bans gas appliances

Washington Gas and several building industry groups such as the National Association of Home Builders, the National Apartment Association, and others have filed a lawsuit against D.C. over its Clean Energy D.C. Building Code Amendment Act of 2022. According to WUSA, the amendment bans gas appliances in new and substantially renovated commercial and residential buildings over three stories by 2077. 

The plaintiffs argue that the law conflicts with the federal Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) and is unenforceable. In response, Beyond Gas D.C. and environmental advocates criticized the lawsuit, saying it’s an attempt to block measures aimed at reducing pollution and improving energy efficiency.
