What does it take to decarbonize a manufactured home community?
According to Smart Cities Dive, about 6% of the housing stock in the country is manufactured homes — formally known as mobile homes — and they are very notoriously energy-intensive per square foot. However, things are changing, at least in one community. A large retrofit project in Lake County, Colorado aims to decarbonize manufactured homes by replacing gas appliances with electric alternatives and enhancing energy efficiency. Despite being funded by federal grants and various stakeholders, manufactured home communities face distinct barriers to accessing energy improvements when compared to traditional housing types. Most states classify manufactured homes as “chattel property,” just like cars and boats.
